PFX VHF and UHF FM 99-channel frequency synthesised portables

The first synthesised PMR portable radio designed by Pye Telecom and a major family of FM hand-held equipment offering up to 99 operating frequencies.

The standard unit was a hand-held model fitted with a multi-way facility connector to enable external microphones and accessories to be used for body-worn applications etc.

The PF85, a 3 channel crystal controlled radio used similar case, battery and mechanics. Both were sold as Pye or Philips.

Transmitter power output 1-5 Watts.

A large family of state-of-the-art portables designed as a replacement for the Pye PFX.

The elegant broadband technology and performance made it most suitable for upper-market, specialist security applications.

The unit was sold to the UK Police and MOD for security applications including a version with 16KB digital encryption.

Transmitter power output 0.5-5 Watts.

A modern, mid-market, competitive series of portable radiotelephones, available in both simple and alphanumeric display versions.

A choice of 64 or 100 channel frequencies was also available.

Transmitter power output 1-5 Watts.

Tetra

1996

Cambridge pioneered the world-wide Tetra digital communication standard for radiotelephones and introduced the first truly digital portable two-way radio products.

Customers were slow to change over to digital and the Dolphin private trunked Tetra radio system was not a commercial success.

Tetra developed slowly until the Public Safety and security agencies began to adopt the concept and moved over to the UK-wide BT Airwave network.

2000 Onwards

These advanced equipment, now in widespread use worldwide, provide digital encryption, GPS location and other modern- day communication facilities.

The UK market for Tetra equipment came to life with the advent of the BT Airwave Tetra system.

Between 2000 and 2005 Police, fire ambulance, other public safety users and Government Agencies moved over from individual private mobile radio systems to the Airwave network.
